IRVINE, Calif. — The Orange County Coroner’s office on Friday released the name of a San Diego County mother was killed in an early morning freeway pileup in Irvine that also left her 6-month-old son injured, the San Diego Union Tribune reports.

The crash victim was Maria Osuna, 25 and a resident of National City. On Thursday, the day of the chain-reaction crash, authorities had said she was a resident of Chula Vista.

A 22-year-old Nevada man has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving following a series of collisions that killed Osuna and left nine people injured.

The first crash happened about 1:30 a.m. on southbound Interstate 5 in Irvine near Alton Parkway (just north of Interstate 405), according to the California Highway Patrol. Roughly 10 minutes later, a second crash occurred, this one involving the Mitsubishi Eclipse that Osuna was driving.

Osuna took off her seat belt to check on her infant son in the back seat, CHP Officer Florentino Olivera said. Moments later, another vehicle struck the Mitsubishi, killing Osuna. Her son was taken to a trauma center.

In all, nine vehicles crashed, the CHP said. Eight people — including three children — were taken to trauma centers, an Orange County Fire Authority captain said.

The Los Angeles Times contributed to this report. Read the full story at San Diego Union-Tribune.
